Do you have tennis elbow?

Although it may seem that, as the name suggests, tennis elbow is only a problem for tennis players, this is not the case. Together we will look at the causes, symptoms and what you can do to help with the pain.

Types of tennis elbow

  • Acute form – occurs during physically demanding work or sport. There is a general overuse of muscles and tendons throughout the arm, which can cause pain, particularly in the elbow.
  • Chronic form – the problem occurs over a long period of time. We talk about this form when the pain lasts for more than 6 weeks. In this case, there may be inflammation throughout the body.

Causes of tennis elbow

  • Working in the garden
  • Computer work – mouse movement
  • butchery work
  • writing
  • Sports in which you throw, throwing or hit a racket
  • cooking
  • Chopping wood
  • and others

Symptoms of tennis elbow

The typical and most important symptom of tennis elbow is a sharp pain in the outer part of the elbow, which can radiate into the shoulder or forearm. You may also feel heat in this area, which indicates inflammation. Swelling around the elbow may also be a symptom. The pain may occur when you exert yourself, such as lifting weights or playing sports. Or the pain may be constant and not affected by any activity.

Treatment of tennis elbow

In addition to medication, it is important to rest during treatment and to avoid overstretching the elbow to give it a chance to recover. It is a good idea to immobilise the arm with a splint to prevent excessive strain on the muscles. The best way to prevent complications is to change your stereotypes, whether it is in recreational sports or when working at the computer, where an inappropriate mouse can be a problem.

Physiotherapy and the right exercises taught by a specialist can also help. The Dorn method can also help. This is a safe method, but must always be done by a professional. Shock waves, taping and various painkiller-based medicines and ointments can also help.

Vinegar packs and icing the affected area are also good. Priessnitz elbow wraps from Mamavis can help. You can soak the inner part in vinegar and keep it chilled in the fridge. The inner part also has a pocket where you can put cooling pads.

In all cases, it is necessary to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis if problems occur.

How does the Priessnitz wrap work?

Do you have a sore throat or other part of your body?

Try Mamavis® Priessnitz wrap

The Priessnitz wrap consists of a cool wet cloth layer and a dry warm layer. In modern times, the classic design has been modified and the use of plastic over the first moist cold layer of the wrap has begun. However, prolonged use of the wrap with plastic can in some cases cause the skin irritation due to steaming (Jandova, 2009).

Mamavis wraps combine all the classic layers, including the so-called “modern layer” – i.e. plastic. However, there is no classic plastic in the wraps , but a warm, breathable core, so you do not have to worry about irritating your skin as you would with plastic.

Soak the inner part in cold water

But how do these layers work together?

Priessnitz wraps are cold steam wraps applied locally to the surface of the body to stimulate local blood circulation. (Capko, 1998)

There are several stages to the process of applying the tiles:

Phase 1: is hypothermic and lasts 5-10 minutes. Vasoconstriction occurs.
Phase 2: is isothermal, lasts 30-40 minutes. Vasoconstriction gradually changes to vasodilation.
Phase 3: hyperthermic, occurs during the 60-80 minutes. Local vasodilation (active hyperemia) occurs at the site of the wrapped area” (Capko, 1998).

Do you understand these technical terms? Apparently very few people do. I had a bit of a problem with them too, so in the following lines I will simplify the effects of Priessnitz wrap for you:

If we use the wrap like a classic Priessnitz wrap, i.e. the inner part is soaked in cold water, wrung out, put back into the wrap and applied to the affected area, three phases occur:

  • The first stage is to lower the temperature by cold compresses, which causes the blood vessels to constrict, or vasoconstrict.
  • In the second phase, the temperature stabilises and the constricted blood vessels gradually dilate.
  • During the third phase, the temperature increases, overheating occurs and the blood vessels dilate at the site, which is called vasodilation. Active hyperemia is a congestion caused by increased blood flow to the area.

The increased blood flow allows immune system cells to reach the sore area more quickly, and the sore part of the body heals more quickly.

The blood vessels first constrict and then dilate

The dilation of the blood vessels results in increased blood flow and permeability (faster delivery and permeability of immune system cells, also increases the availability of oxygen, nutrients and glucose to the muscles).

Relieves your body

It always depends on the nature and duration of your problem, so it depends on when you start treating the problem and how often you use the wrap.

FAQ

J. Novotny MD, is currently the Head Physician of the Priessnitz Spa in Jesenik. We bring you instructions directly from the Chief Physician on the correct use of Priessnitz compresses and wraps.
Manual – Priessnitz wraps
There is a fundamental difference between soothing and irritating wrap. Astringent wraps are used for acute conditions – injuries, fever, acute infections, general pain (headache, abdominal pain, muscle pain).
Astringent wraps are currently the most widely used and medically recognised and proven. Very often the use of these wraps can achieve a better therapeutic effect than proven drugs and other medical substances.
Irritant wraps are used for chronic conditions that last for weeks or months. These wraps were used extensively by V. Priessnitz at the time of his greatest fame. However, as the use of these wraps leads to crises, they are very rarely used today.

Soothing wraps
The wrap consists of three layers – the first is a cloth soaked in cold water, preferably 8-16°C/46-60°F  and should be well wrung out. This is covered by a semi-permeable layer – a thick canvas or, nowadays, semi-permeable synthetic materials. Under no circumstances should plastic be used !!!! All this is covered with a layer of dry fabric. In order for the wrap to have an optimal effect, the wrap must be replaced after the inner layer has warmed up. The application time for a wrap is approximately 5-10 minutes. These wraps need to be repeated for optimum effect. V. Priessnitz repeated the application 20-40 times a day.

I recommend soothing wraps using the comfortable and improved Mamavis method. More instructional videos here.

Soothing wrapping effect:
Cold has

1. analgesic effect at the site – relieves pain
2. anti-inflammatory – relieves inflammation by first constricting and then reactively dilating the blood vessels at the site of application with increased oxygen and defensive substances to the site of inflammation and increased flushing of toxic substances that are the product of the inflammatory process.
3. reduces and eliminates swelling by increasing blood and lymph circulation in the area of application.

Use of soothing Priessnitz wraps:

Post-injury conditions – acute joint and muscle pain
For common fevers, wrap the head, chest or legs.
Acute pain: head, teeth, joints, muscles, abdomen,
Swellings of post-traumatic or vascular origin
Inflammation of the veins
Psychological disorders – especially depression.
The subject of irritant wraps already belongs to the field of medical and rehabilitative care and should therefore not be addressed by the general public in order to avoid damage to health due to unprofessional application and evaluation of the response to this treatment.

The modern Mamavis® wrap helps with neuropathy problems

The basic idea was to combine the three layers into one and practically fasten them with adjustable Velcro. The result is a comfortable Priessnitz wrap for the 21st century.

The wraps were used mainly for bronchial colds, tonsillitis, laryngitis, joint pain, rheumatism or for pain relief, migraines, etc. According to the recommendation of J. Novotny ,MD, the chief physician of Priessnitz Medical Spa, it is necessary for diabetics to apply Priessnitz wraps in cold form on the affected limbs to improve blood circulation in the periphery and relieve pain in neuropathies. If cold packs are used as soon as possible, the development of neuropathy will be delayed. These cold packs are suitable as a natural and gentle alternative to conventional treatment.

Where do Priessnitz wraps come from?

The origins of the Priessnitz wrap can be traced back to the first half of the 19th century. This very simple but effective technique has retained its place in physiotherapy to this day. Wraps are most commonly used in rehabilitation, surgery and traumatology, paediatrics and rheumatology. However, it has its place in most medical disciplines where the physical principle of cooling or warming, whether localised or generalised, is appropriate.

The basic difference between soothing and irritating compresses is that soothing compresses are used in acute conditions – injuries, fever, acute infections, general pain (headache, abdominal, muscular).

Migraine and headache: symptoms, causes and pain relief

Migraine and headache are common health problems that affect millions of people worldwide. These conditions can cause significant discomfort and affect patients’ quality of life. In this article, we will look at the symptoms and causes of migraines and headaches, as well as ways to relieve the pain.

Migraines and headaches

Migraine is a neurological disorder that causes severe headaches. Migraine symptoms can include throbbing pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting. Migraines often occur repeatedly and can last from a few hours to several days. It is important to recognise a migraine and get the right treatment.

Causes of headaches

Headaches are a common problem that can be caused by a variety of factors. Common causes of headaches include tension, stress, poor posture, lack of sleep and dehydration. A migraine is different from a normal headache, although the exact causes of migraines are not entirely clear. Genetics and the environment play an important role in the development of migraines.

Migraines and headaches relief

There are several ways to get relief from migraines and headaches. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation can help release tension and reduce the intensity of the pain. Getting regular sleep, drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding migraine triggers can also help. Some people find that taking painkillers such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs helps.

Priessnitz wraps

One alternative approach to migraine and headache relief is Priessnitz wraps. These wraps are performed by applying cold and warm compresses to the affected area. While cold compresses can help reduce inflammation and swelling, warm compresses can relieve muscle tension. When using Priessnitz wraps, it is important to follow proper procedures and consult with a physician.

If you’re looking for an effective way to get relief from migraines and headaches, you may be interested in the Priessnitz Wrap Headband from our e-shop.

Do you have a runny nose?

Rhinitis is one of the most common diseases in today’s population. It is an acute inflammation of the nasal mucosa. It is most commonly caused by viruses that belong to a group of viruses called rhinoviruses. When we breathe in, the viruses enter the nose and settle on the mucous membrane, where they multiply and cause inflammation. The body’s weakened immune system, especially during a cold, contributes significantly to this process.

A cold can also be caused by various types of allergy, such as dust, pollen or pet dander.

Rhinitis

A runny nose can cause headaches, burning eyes and sometimes a high temperature or fever. There is no cure for a cold and it usually lasts for seven days. The body can deal with a cold on its own, but it is a good idea to relieve the symptoms of a cold. Increasing your vitamin C intake is recommended. The best natural source of vitamin C is fresh fruit and vegetables (such as peppers). It is also important to drink plenty of fluids.

Unfortunately, there is no simple way to prevent colds. However, there are things we can do to boost our immunity. For example, it is recommended that you get regular vaccinations. You can find instructions on how to get a good cold HERE.

Sore Throat

Who has not noticed that most people lately struggle with inadequate immunity and frequent respiratory diseases. And yet we all need to go to work, school and if we get sick, we need to recover in a short time.

The best helper for sore throats and colds

Priessnitz wraps bring relief and speed up treatment. Did you know that Vincenz Priessnitz discovered them 220 years ago? Since then, they have become a proven means of alleviating symptoms and shortening the time needed for treatment.

While many of us know Priessnitz wraps as the original wraps with 3 individual layers that don’t stick well to the body, slip or drip water, you may be surprised to learn that today there are wraps designed for reuse that can be part of your home medicine cabinet. These modern versions of wraps are made from high gravity cotton and have internal pockets that can be filled with healing herbs or essential oils.
One of the advantages of these wraps is that they can be maintained and reused. Forget the impractical disposable wraps and get the modern reusable Priessnitz wraps, which can be easily washed and reused.

Their effectiveness lies in the combination of reducing inflammation, promoting circulation and releasing muscle tension, which can lead to faster improvement in the child’s and adult’s condition.

Priessnitz wraps are a safe and effective choice for anyone who wants to speed up recovery from respiratory diseases, improve peripheral blood circulation and relieve pain from neuropathy, and who is looking for a natural and gentle way to supplement conventional treatment.

You deserve the best care and Priessnitz wraps may be just the right choice to support your health and wellbeing.
